Leadership Change at SANEA

The South African National Energy Association is the South African member committee of the World Energy Council, an international body drawing its members from some 93 countries. SANEA held its Annual General Meeting last night, 14 March 2007, and members approved a change in leadership of the Association.

Mr Sipho Nkosi (Exxaro Resources) has completed his 3 year term as Chairman and is succeeded by Brian Statham.

Statham was elected Secretary-General of SANEA in 1999 and has helped steer SANEA through an important transitional phase in its history to the point where it is now an independent organisation, representing corporate and individual members from the diverse energy sectors of South Africa.

In addition to his role in SANEA, Statham has been active in World Energy Council initiatives.  From 2002 to 2004 he was the Convenor of the “Member Secretaries Advisory Group” and in 2004 he was asked to Chair the WEC Study on “Energy Policy Scenarios to 2050”; a study of nominally three years duration.

Statham takes on the leadership of SANEA at a time when energy matters are a prominent concern, not only in South Africa, but globally.  SANEA, as a non-partisan energy association, has the potential to play a catalytic role in the resolution of the energy dilemmas facing South Africans.

Alison von Ketelhodt steps into the position of Secretary-General; the key position formerly held by Statham.  She is the first women to hold this position in SANEA and brings with her years of experience in strategic planning in the petro-chemicals industry.  Von Ketelhodt also has significant credibility within the World Energy Council membership due to her involvement in the WEC’s global studies programme and her contribution as a member of the Advisory Panel for the Director of Studies.

Sipho Nkosi will remain on the Board and Thulani Gcabashe (Eskom), Kevin Morgan (BHP Billiton), Jean Madzongwe (DBSA), Dr Chris Cooper (Univ of Johannesburg), Vicky Basson (KZN Energy Services), Rose Phetoe (NERSA) and Marius Willemse were all confirmed as directors of SANEA.

Members also approved a change in the membership structure, creating a separate category for SMME companies.
