The company, which is Africa’s biggest electricity supplier, said that its 4 200 MW coal-fired station, to be built near Lephalale, in Limpopo, previously dubbed Project Alpha and Project Charlie, was now called ‘Medupi’, which meant “the rain that soaked the lands, giving economic relief”. Its pumped storage peaking capacity plant, previously referred to as Project Hotel, was now named Ingula. In an emailed statement, Eskom said that the new name referred to the creamy contents at the top of a milk calabash. Ingula is situated in the Drakensberg, near Ladysmith. The open cycle gas turbine (OCGT) station in Atlantis would be known as Ankerlig power station, which was derived from an Afrikaans adage, signifying a community rising from poverty to achieve growth and prosperity. The second OCGT station, at Mossel Bay, would be known as Gourikwa, which was the name of the ethnic group that lived in the area. Collectively, the two OCGT power stations would add another 1 050 MW to the national grid. owever, Eskom said that it had plans in place for the OCGTs to deliver an additional 1 050 MW, increasing the total output of the two gas-fired power plants to 2 100 MW. |
