Necsa team wins award for nuclear reactor calculational software package
Nominated to participate in the category of research for innovation, the OSCAR-4 team of the Radiation and Reactor Theory division at Necsa, Pelindaba, received an award in the category for "Innovation developed through a corporate organisation or institution" at the prestigious annual National Science and Technology Forum (NSTF) Awards, which took place in the beginning of May.
Is Eskom prepared for the 2010 FIFA World Cup?
Since South Africa won the bid to host the 2010 FIFA World Cup, the successful delivery of a reliable, uninterrupted supply of electricity for the event has been in the spotlight. On 24 May, Eskom released a statement saying that a recent visit by South Africa's Parliamentary Portfolio Committee expressed comfort with Eskom's preparedness.

UK energy bill to focus on efficiency measures, Queen says during opening of Parliament
On 25 May, the Queen introduced 22 bills that UK coalition government will focus on in the next year and a half. A national programme of energy efficiency measures to home and businesses across the UK has also been put in place in order to deliver secure, low carbon energy supplies and fair competition in the energy markets.
World Bank holds seminar on climate change and Africa

Lesotho plant supplies first million CFLs to Eskom
Electronics company Philips announced that its Lesotho joint venture has supplied more than 1-million energy saving compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) to Eskom as part of a new tender.
South Africa's neighbours to help out with electricity requirements
Powering the 2010 FIFA World Cup will require 275 MW more than the normal winter requirements. According to Eskom, this extra demand on South Africa's electricity will be "sufficiently supplied by the green energy contributions which add up to approximately 2000 MW."
Chinese bank invests $1-billion in Zambia power plant
The China Development Bank (CDB) has committed to spend $1-billion to help build a power plant in order to boost the country's electricity supply to 600 MW. According to Jiang Chaol Liang, president of COB, China is ready to provide this equity to the Kafue Gorge Lower power plant development.
Eskom & BHP Billiton sign smelter contract
Eskom and BHP Billiton announced on Sunday that they have reached agreement on an amended power supply contract for the Mozal aluminium smelter in Mozambique.
