SANEA Talking Energy - 2010/03

Eskom gains MPS Coal Power Innovation Award
Here's a good news story about Eskom. Modern Power Systems is a very credible international technical journal and they have selected Eskom for one of their innovation awards. While there's so much negative press about Eskom and its executives, some recognition at last for the rank and file who are doing their very best to keep the lights on and are delivering world class performance. Energy and electricity are not synonyms
I am becoming increasingly disturbed by the frequency with which I get invited to "energy" events only to find that the agenda is focussed on "electricity". This reveals our national obsession regarding electricity supply and our disregard for, or alarming ignorance of the challenges facing our liquid fuels sector.

Can we grow energy flows when resources are declining?
Following our theme of asking a SANEA board member to give his or her opinions and insights on a topical issue each month, this issue features Dr. Chris Cooper who is an environmental scientist, microbiologist, and divisional manager at Makona Hardware and Industrial (Pty) Ltd.

The recent call for entries in the 2010 Eskom Energy Efficient Lighting Design Competition means that resourceful designers once again have the opportunity to express their creativity and technological know-how for a good cause - together with the chance of winning handsome cash rewards!

Considerable growth in African clean energy projects
In 2008, the Standard Bank Group said that the value of carbon emissions- reduction projects in Africa was expected to almost triple. Wind Power Project for Kenya
A new company has received government approval to set up a wind farm, a project seen as a major boost to Kenya's search for less costly and renewable energy to meet the growing demand of electricity from domestic and industrial use.

WEC Regional meeting in Johannesburg
During February SANEA (the World Energy Council'S South African Committee) hosted a workshop and African Regional meeting. The workshop focused on Energy and Climate Policy Assessment and also provided an opportunity to discuss the WEC''s other flagship, Energy Policy Scenarios to 2050, as well as topics of importance to the region, including energy equity and poverty, which the WEC is partnering on with the World Economic Forum as part of the Energy Poverty Action (EPA) project.

Focussing minds for one hour
Earth Hour ran for the first time in 2007. An initiative co-founded by Andy Ridley, Earth Hour 2010 proved to be another massive success. If nothing else, it's a simple initiative to unite the citizens of the world in working to build a healthier lifestyle and sustainable planet. South African Nobel Peace Prize Winner, Reverend Archbishop Desmond Tutu said, "Earth Hour is an opportunity for every man, woman and child from all corners of the globe to unite and show the world that by working together we can win the battle against global warming".
