Eskom's Medupi station to be more environmentally friendly
On 5 January, Eskom announced that its Medupi Power Station in Lephalale will incorporate a supercritical steam cycle, which will utilise higher temperatures and pressures than previous generation machines, thereby operating with greater efficiency.
WEC Montréal 2010: Call for technical papers deadline is Feb 15!
The World Energy Congress 2010 has announced that the deadline for sending complete submissions for technical papers has been extended to 15 February 2010. Authors who had planned to submit their technical papers can use this additional period to complete their documents for WEC Montréal 2010, which will be held from 12 - 16 September 2010 at Palais des congrès de Montréal.
Germany proposes reduction of feed-in tariffs for solar sector
Solar stocks at the German Stock Exchange have been sent into a dive after German Environment Minister, Norbert Röttgen, announced to introduce a proposal for the reduction of feed-in-tariffs for the solar sector at the World Future Energy Summit 2010.

Renewable energy encouraged with solar water heating rebate
The Eskom rebate for its Solar Water Heating Programme increased on 11 January 2010, giving South Africans even more of an incentive to start switching to solar energy.

New coal-fired power station for Mozambique
On 18 January 2010, Riversdale Mining (an Australian coal producer) received environmental approval from Mozambique to build the Benga power plant. This approval was granted by the Coordination of Environmental Action (MICOA) after Riversdale Mining completed an Environmental Impact Study (EIS) in mid 2009.
