SANEA Talking Energy - 2010/02

Integrated Energy Plans
If you have heard me talk over the past few years, you will know that I go on and on about the need for a realistic and robust Integrated Energy Plan for South Africa. I am a naturally optimistic person and I was very pleased when President Zuma announced in his State of the Nation address that an inter-ministerial committee is being put in place to develop such a plan. The details of the process are scant, but he wishes to ensure some fundamental changes - to the electricity sector in particular.

Emphasis on energy issues
With discussion and conjecture about energy issues being so prevalent in South Africa, we asked SANEA board member James Arnott of Accenture what energy issues he is passionate about:

The last yeas has seen much debate about global warming and a requirement for government commitments to reduce emissions - this has almost been as rigorous as the debate about the global recession and the speed of recovery.

South African Nuclear Energy Corporation
The South African Nuclear Energy Corporation (Necsa) was established as a public company in terms of the Nuclear Energy Act, 1999 (Act No. 46 of 1999) and is wholly owned by the State.

Aiming to redirect US$1-billion into carbon-efficient companies
IFC, a member of the World Bank Group, and Standard & Poor's (S&P) are launching the world's first carbon efficient index for emerging markets that should mobilise more than US$1-billion for carbon-efficient companies over the next three years.

South African Company removes barriers to emissions reporting
Due to the lack of binding legislation, measuring and voluntarily reporting on emissions in South Africa, this has been left to the remit of companies on the JSE Top 100 as part of the Carbon Disclosure Project, as well as environmentally conscious companies recognising their responsibilities in this respect.

Focus on Africa at WEC Energy Indaba 2010
Although perhaps not generally known, Africa currently holds significant energy resources with a high level of energy self-sufficiency for the region as a whole.

Indaba on World Wind Energy
The World Wind Energy Conference & Exhibition WWEC, the leading event in wind energy which takes place on a different continent each year, will be held in Istanbul, Turkey, from 15 to 17 June 2010.

Marlene's - 25 Degrees Editor's comment
February has been a very interesting month for South Africa and the South African energy sector. President Zuma delivered his State of the Nation address and Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan delivered his budget speech. 2010 promises to be a very challenging, yet exciting time for the South Africa and the energy sector.

Emphasis on sustainability and energy efficiency at BAU 2011
In the field of architecture and construction, sustainability has become more than just a watchword, it has come to mean building in a manner that is cost-efficient, environmentally friendly and sparing on the use of resources.

Renewable energy to the fore!
The International Renewable Energy Alliance (REN Alliance) calls for renewables to be at the forefront of the post-2012 climate action regime, and has issued the REN Alliance COP 15 Policy Statement which insists that the Kyoto mechanisms become more straightforward for project development and that the programmatic approaches are centred on progressing renewable energy systems.
