Public hearings into Eskom's application to be heard in 2010
Public hearings into Eskom's proposed 45 percent tariff hike application are to be held in January 2010, the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) announced recently. This after the regulator held a meeting to approve the approach and timeline for processing the utility's Multi-Year Price Determination 2 (MYPD 2) for the three-year period beginning in 2010 to 2013. The 93 page document was submitted to the regulator on 30 September.

Update on power price hike expected in November
The National Energy Regulator (NERSA) told Parliament that it plans to publish Eskom's application for another power price hike some time in November.

SA wants to use more solar energy
A large scale "Solar Park" that will encourage an extensive use of solar energy is on the cards for South Africa. Energy Minister Dipuo Peters signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the United States-based Clinton Climate Initiative (CCI). The agreement will pave the way for the creation of a Solar Park aimed at curbing the use of conventional energy in favour of solar energy as the planet battles with the effects of global warming.

WWF calls for prompt action on climate change
The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) warned that there are only five years left to mitigate the effects of fossil fuels and called for prompt action to deal with climate change. Kim Carstensen, leader of the WWF's Global Climate Initiative, said the findings show that "the window of opportunity to act on climate change is rapidly closing."

SA waste-to-power plans hindered by high costs
It's a pity that high equipment costs are hindering efforts to turn animal and human waste into power, as this waste could produce as much as 200 MW to assist small communities.
