SANEA congratulates the new Minister of Energy
SANEA congratulates Minister Elizabeth Dipuo Peters on her appointment as Minister of Energy. The energy sector in South Africa faces many challenges and SANEA, with its affiliations to the World Energy Council, is ready to play its role in supporting, encouraging and enabling transformation of the sector. The decision to make "Energy" a separate ministry is welcomed as this will assist in putting focus on the many issues that need attention. Brian A Statham Chairman.

Engen wins breakthrough deal to supply Kenya Airways
Engen, the African energy multinational, has beaten down strong competition to win a tender for the year-long supply of aviation fuel to Kenya Airways, at the Democratic Republic of Congo's Lubumbashi airport. The agreement is for the delivery of 500 kilolitres of Jet A1 fuel. It has been running since 9 April 2009 and will end on 10 March 2010. Despite the time limit, the possibility for expansion exists - if not in contract period, then in scope. Engen operates at all the DRC's airports (Kinshasa, Kisangani, Goma, Mbandaka and Mbujimayi).

Only a few weeks to FIFA Confederations Cup
On Monday 27 April the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP) pledged support to South Africa in ensuring that the country has enough electricity to power the Confederations Cup and the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

South Africa's electricity consumption declined by 4,6 percent in March
According to a report by Statistics South Africa, the country's electricity consumption declined by 4,6% in March 2009, compared with March 2008.

NERSA reduces tariffs on petroleum transportation
The National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) has reduced tariffs by 10.38 percent for petroleum transportation through Transnet's pipelines for the 2009/10 financial year.

New Energy Department announces short-to-medium priorities
The newly-established Department of Energy announced its short- to medium-term priorities at a conference Cape Town recently. The new Energy Department, under the leadership of Elizabeth Dipuo Peters, will focus on issues such as renewable energy, energy efficiency and new generation capacity. It also announced that it planned to launch a green jobs initiative.

Solar revolution brings hope for global energy crisis
World leaders in solar energy will present the latest findings in renewable energy resources at the biennial ISES Solar World Congress 2009 that will be held in Johannesburg, from 11 -14 October. One of the major draw cards is Dr Hermann Scheer from Germany recipient of the prestigious Karl W Böer Solar Energy Medal of Merit who will share is expertise on feed in tariffs. Scheer has played a unique role as a world pioneer for the promotion of Solar Energy in all its forms. He also established the International Renewable Energy Agency 'Irena', which South Africa is expected to join soon.
