Dear SANEA Stakeholders

In presenting the awards Brian A Statham, the Chairman of the South African National Energy Association (SANEA) paid tribute to the many men and women who are striving on a daily basis to ensure that South Africa enjoys a stable and secure energy future. "SANEA's Vision of 'Energy People Working Together' is alive tonight as we come together to congratulate these winners."

"It is important for all of us to actively participate and join forces to find the simple solutions which will change the lives of millions of people for the better. The need for informed debate, integrated planning and cohesive action is as important now as it has ever been in our history" said Statham.

"We need to recognise and celebrate those who are shaping the energy landscape. Some achievements come from large corporations while others come from individuals working at a local level. All are important and tonight we acknowledge and salute their efforts in the belief that their achievements will inspire others." Statham added.

The premier "Energy Award" went to Prof Philip Lloyd for his life-long contribution on diverse energy matters in South Africa. His countless efforts have benefitted the lives of thousands of our citizens.

The Energy Project Award went to Babcock International Group for the Mondi Merebank Multi Fuel Boiler (MFB) Contract. This contract pioneered a number of locally developed world class technological innovations with international application. Sandile Mthiyane of ABSA was commended (in absentia) for the good effort in making the Johannesburg ABSA campus into an energy park, being efficient and independent with a strong focus on energy effectiveness and efficiency. Justin Smith of Woolworths was commended in this category for his company's commitment to a holistic energy strategy, focusing on lighting, refrigeration, air conditioning, store design and transport, all within the broader framework of climate change.

The media can be very influential and this year the Energy Journalism Award was awarded to two candidates. Hillary Erasmus of Brooke Pattrick Publications received an award for her insistence on accurate and objective reporting of energy matters. She ensures that her work is well researched and that it presents a balanced view of the issues. An award was also presented (in absentia) to Simon Gear for his contribution to create awareness about energy efficiency.

The final category was Energy Education where Adrian Vermaak was commended for his initiative and contribution in leading the professional development of young engineers and technicians in the Nelson Bay Metropolitan area.
