to be lead by

Paul Runge
Managing Director of Africa Project Access

Paul Runge is Managing Director of the specialised consulting firm Africa Project Access. His company supplies approximately 80 companies and organisations with early alerts of projects across a broad range of sectors in Sub-Saharan Africa. As a former diplomat, he lived in Gabon and supervised projects in the Cape Verde Islands. He spent six years with the South African Foreign Trade Organisation and led many of the first South African business delegations into other African countries following the ending of international sanctions against South Africa. In servicing his clients, he works closely with a number of Development Finance Institutions and undertakes visits to the head quarters of the World Bank and African Development Bank.

He has recently published Potholes & Profits: Business (& other) Conversations and Experiences from Africa which is an anecdotal account of his experiences in a number of African markets. He speaks English, Afrikaans, French and German, is conversant in Portuguese and has studied Zulu.

'Some Realities of Doing Business in Africa with Emphasis on Accessing Infrastructure'

After some 30 years in experience in assisting companies to access business and projects in Africa, I have developed a practical rationale and methodology that will be of value to companies and organisations.

The projects pipeline for Sub-Saharan Africa has never been so full. Major infrastructure developments include the North-South Corridor and the Zambezi Valley Development Programme. There are some basic realities that must be taken into account when attempting to take advantage of these lucrative opportunities.

However, business in Africa has become far more complex in recent times. The playing field has globalised as BRIC and other countries compete with the traditional former colonial powers. Project finance has also become more complex than the historic Brettenwoods lending framework. There is for example, increased participation by Arab funders and new instruments offered by specialised equity funds.

As we venture into the sub-continent, we must be equipped with in-market intelligence and not only standard information. I will provide the required insights based on direct reference to current projects and trends.

This presentation is not to be missed!
